Now you know that there are many dangerous toxins in your food. But did you ever think about your cosmetics, lotions, and sunscreen?
The concern is over parabens, a group of compounds used as a preservative in moisturizing creams and other cosmetics. If you’re worried stay away from products with any ingredient containing the word paraben, such as methyl-, propyl-, butyl- or benzylparaben.
I’ve been follwoing the website, Choose Safe Cosmetics, http://www.safecosmetics.org/, they have a campaign for safe cosmetics. On their site they give a list of ingredients to avoid:
Fragrance-in perfume, lotions, shampoos, etc. (allergies, cancer)
DMDM hydantoin and Imidazolidinyl urea (toxic contaminants)
Parabens or -paraben (hormone disruption, linked to cancer)
“PEG” and “-eth” (hidden toxic contaminants)
Triclosan and triclocarban (thyroid, reproductive and environmental concerns)
Avoid soaps and shampoos with DEA. Avoid deoderant with aluminum.
Hydroquinone (cancer, allergies, reproductive toxicity)
Oxybenzone (allergies, developmental toxicity, hormone disruption)
Products to Avoid
Anti-aging creams with lactic, glycolic, AHA and BHA acids

**11/11 Toxins in your suncreen
So you may be thinking that you are protecting your skin when you're applying sunscreen during this intense, Texas heat. Thinking the higher the SPF, the better, right? Well, think again. The chemicals in sunscreen you are pouring into your skin can be more harmful for you than the actual rays from the sun. The Environmental Working Group (http://www.ewg.org/) claims more than 84% of sun screen lotions with high SPF levels actually failed to protect sunbathers against all harmful rays, and their chemical ingredients do more harm than good. A big problem in the sun care industry is that in their attempt to provide higher SPF levels, they have to increase the chemical compounds in sunscreen to allow prolonged safe exposure to the suns rays.
There are 3 forms of identifiable rays. They are UVA, UVB, and UBC. UVC rays are prevented form reaching earth by the ozone layer. UVB rays are medium rays. They penetrate the surface of the skin and destroy collagen and elastin under the skin's surface. These rags cause wrinkles and aging.
Toxin Free Sunscreens
The only two widely available commercial sunscreens which do not contain petrochemicals or other toxins are made by Badger and Mexitan. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are thought to be two of the safest sunsceens. Make sure the sunscreen has at least 7 % zinc oxide to replace oxybenzone. Instead of being absorbed into the skin to react to ultraviolet light so that the skin does not burn, as chemical sunscreens do, they keep the light from penetrating the skin in the first place .
Chemical sunscreens have 3 primary defects:
#1 They are poweful free radical generators. This increases cellular damage and changes that lead to cancer.
#2 They often have strong estrogenic activity.
#3 They are synthetic chemicals that are alien to the human body and accumulate in body fat stores.
There are a few companies that make sunscreens which do contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, but they fill it full of toxic petrochemicals, so they are not recommended.
AVOID oxybenzone. This widely used ingredient rates poorly due to high absorption through skin, high rates of allergic reactions, and growing concerns about hormone disruption.
The sun provides many benefits such as promoting the formation of vitamin D. The key is to never burn.
I have found Badger sunscreen at Whole Foods and Sprouts. You can also order these safe sunscreens online.
